|
Under the European Union DAPHNE programme, the multi-EU country project entitled "Child Abandonment and its Prevention" held its one day conference in Warsaw on 5-6 December. Organised by the Nobody's Children Foundation, the event presented outcomes so far and issues specifically related to the current situation in Poland.
Four member organizations of EUROCHILD from among the 10 participating countries - Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland - are taking part in the project. The project is focusing on the different ways child abandonment can be prevented and how in the different countries of Europe the legislation, practice, training of professionals, and data collection takes place. At the conference Maria Kolankiewicz, from University of Warsaw and a director of an institution made important opening remarks on the current situation in Poland and the possible directions, Jean-Claude Legrand, UNICEF CEE-CIS regional advisor spoke about the UNIFEC campaign "At home or in a home?" and the situation in the region. Maria Herczog spoke about the rights of children deprived of family care and the current efforts made in the EU on DI. A panel debate was also held on baby hatches, a form of abandonment widely supported but also controversially discussed in Poland.
